From my experience, the best receptions have a hybrid of DJ as MC shared with a family member or friend.
Here is the most common arrangement:
First, the DJ will introduce the bridal party from the DJ table and then the MC will go to the microphone and do the more personal things during dinner like the welcome, introducing toasts and speeches. Your MC is often in the bridal party, so it makes sense that we do that first introduction.
During dinner, your MC will know you and be able to insert personal content that would not be genuine coming from the DJ.
After dinner, the DJ can take over so that your MC can drink and dance and not need to watch the time for late night announcements. Also, do you want your best man or maid of honour on the mic after having drinks? Good chance he or she knows too much, and you don’t want anything embarrassing coming over the sound system.
There are many variations to this script. You will find there are some examples of itineraries from weddings below and they are downloadable as word and excel files so feel free to take them and make them your own.
Also, when you hire Maximum Music, we will provide a handheld cordless microphone at no charge for your MC to use if there is not one included from your venue and we do not charge for our DJ to be your MC. It is part of the job and to work for us as a DJ you need to be competent on the microphone, well spoken and skilled at keeping the reception on track only when necessary. We are not there to crack jokes or ad lib, that is the domain of your friends and family who know you better.
